CALL TO ACTION: Black Hoodies on 11/2."
I wouldn't usually be so self-promoting as to take it out and put it in a new diary. However... #1, I really think this could be important. #2, Have to try my best to get this on the train while it's still accelerating. And #3 Today's my birthday, goddamn it, and I've never diaried before, so I deserve some attention this once, so read below the dotted line...
I'll be wearing a BLUE hoodie.
Because I don't have a black one, but also because I don't want one. Our movement shouldn't be about conformity. Do you want to be like Mussolini's blackshirts or Hitler's brownshirts (or O'Duffy's blueshirts, for that matter)? The mob mentality of the disaffected youth can be dangerous stuff and if we're going to use that kind of imagery, we need to be damn careful.
PLEASE, wear a hoodie in WHATEVER COLOR YOU LIKE.
It means the difference between conformity, which is bad, and solidarity, which is good. We need solidarity in order to win. If we need conformity then we've already lost.
Eminem's favorite color may be black, but mine is blue. When I see young people out on election day in a rainbow of hoodies, that will mean something.
